The Basics of Backgammon Game Plans – Part Two

As we dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a game of ability and pure luck. The goal is to shift your checkers safely around the board to your inner board while at the same time your opponent moves their chips toward their inner board in the opposite direction. With competing player chips moving in opposing directions there is going to be conflict and the requirement for specific techniques at specific times. Here are the last two Backgammon plans to round out your game.

The Priming Game Strategy

If the purpose of the blocking tactic is to slow down the opponent to move his pieces, the Priming Game strategy is to completely stop any activity of the opposing player by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s chips will either get hit, or result a damaged position if he/she at all tries to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be established anywhere between point two and point eleven in your game board. As soon as you have successfully constructed the prime to stop the activity of the opponent, the opponent does not even get a chance to toss the dice, and you shift your pieces and roll the dice yet again. You will win the game for sure.

The Back Game Tactic

The aims of the Back Game tactic and the Blocking Game technique are very similar – to harm your competitor’s positions hoping to better your odds of succeeding, however the Back Game strategy relies on seperate techniques to achieve that. The Back Game technique is often used when you’re far behind your opponent. To play Backgammon with this plan, you have to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single piece) late in the game. This technique is more challenging than others to play in Backgammon seeing as it needs careful movement of your pieces and how the chips are relocated is partly the outcome of the dice roll.
