Backgammon – 3 General Plans
September 22nd, 2017 by Kaitlynn

In astonishingly simple terms, there are three chief tactics used. You must be agile enough to switch techniques almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time trouble since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
