Backgammon – 3 General Schemes

In very simple terms, there are 3 general game plans employed. You need to be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time difficulty seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your chances. The better places for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
