Backgammon – 3 Main Schemes

In astonishingly simple terms, there are three main plans used. You must be able to switch techniques almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to block in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
