The Essential Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part Two

As we have dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a casino game of talent and good luck. The aim is to move your chips safely around the board to your inner board and at the same time your opposing player shifts their chips toward their inside board in the opposite direction. With opposing player checkers heading in opposite directions there is going to be conflict and the need for specific techniques at particular times. Here are the last two Backgammon techniques to round out your game.

The Priming Game Tactic

If the goal of the blocking strategy is to hamper the opponents ability to move his pieces, the Priming Game plan is to completely block any movement of the opponent by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s chips will either get bumped, or end up in a bad position if he/she at all attempts to leave the wall. The ambush of the prime can be setup anywhere between point two and point 11 in your board. After you’ve successfully assembled the prime to stop the movement of the opponent, the opponent does not even get to toss the dice, that means you move your chips and toss the dice yet again. You will be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Tactic

The goals of the Back Game technique and the Blocking Game tactic are similar – to hinder your opponent’s positions hoping to improve your odds of winning, but the Back Game tactic relies on different tactics to achieve that. The Back Game technique is commonly used when you are far behind your competitor. To play Backgammon with this technique, you have to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This plan is more challenging than others to play in Backgammon seeing as it needs careful movement of your checkers and how the pieces are moved is partially the outcome of the dice roll.
