The Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part Two
April 22nd, 2021 by Kaitlynn

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a casino game of talent and luck. The goal is to shift your chips safely around the board to your inside board while at the same time your opposing player moves their chips toward their home board in the opposite direction. With opposing player pieces moving in opposite directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for specific techniques at specific instances. Here are the last two Backgammon techniques to finish off your game.

The Priming Game Tactic

If the aim of the blocking strategy is to slow down the opponent to shift their checkers, the Priming Game tactic is to completely barricade any activity of the opponent by assembling a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s chips will either get hit, or end up in a damaged position if she at all tries to leave the wall. The ambush of the prime can be built anywhere between point 2 and point 11 in your game board. As soon as you have successfully constructed the prime to block the movement of the competitor, the opponent doesn’t even get to toss the dice, and you move your checkers and roll the dice yet again. You will be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Plan

The goals of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game plan are similar – to harm your opponent’s positions hoping to better your chances of winning, but the Back Game tactic uses alternate techniques to achieve that. The Back Game plan is generally employed when you’re far behind your opponent. To participate in Backgammon with this tactic, you need to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This tactic is more difficult than others to employ in Backgammon because it needs careful movement of your chips and how the pieces are moved is partially the outcome of the dice roll.
