Backgammon – 3 Main Techniques
March 29th, 2022 by Kaitlynn

In exceptionally simple terms, there are three fundamental tactics employed. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time dire straits because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better places for anchors are close to your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
