Backgammon – Three Basic Strategies
April 30th, 2022 by Kaitlynn

In astonishingly general terms, there are three fundamental plans used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time calamity considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be played when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest locations for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, because you do not have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
