Backgammon – 3 Basic Plans
May 25th, 2022 by Kaitlynn

In exceptionally general terms, there are three chief plans employed. You want to be agile enough to switch tactics quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable course of action at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious dire straits considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: after all, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
