Backgammon – 3 Main Plans
January 21st, 2023 by Kaitlynn

In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 general strategies used. You must be able to hop between game plans instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious calamity seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as this strategy greatly improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchors are near your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
