Backgammon – Three Basic Plans

In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You need to be able to switch tactics instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in serious difficulty taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best places for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
