Backgammon – 3 Basic Plans
January 11th, 2024 by Kaitlynn

In astonishingly general terms, there are three chief tactics used. You must be able to switch tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is then in serious trouble since they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have other spare checkers to move! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
