The Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part Two
August 28th, 2024 by Kaitlynn

As we dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a casino game of skill and good luck. The goal is to shift your pieces carefully around the board to your home board and at the same time your opposing player moves their checkers toward their inner board in the opposing direction. With competing player pieces shifting in opposing directions there is going to be conflict and the requirement for specific tactics at specific instances. Here are the two final Backgammon techniques to complete your game.

The Priming Game Plan

If the aim of the blocking plan is to hamper the opponents ability to move their pieces, the Priming Game strategy is to completely barricade any movement of the opponent by assembling a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s checkers will either get hit, or result a battered position if she ever attempts to leave the wall. The ambush of the prime can be established anywhere between point two and point eleven in your board. After you’ve successfully assembled the prime to block the activity of the opponent, the opponent does not even get to toss the dice, and you shift your chips and roll the dice again. You’ll be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Tactic

The aims of the Back Game tactic and the Blocking Game strategy are similar – to hurt your opponent’s positions hoping to boost your chances of succeeding, however the Back Game plan uses seperate tactics to achieve that. The Back Game tactic is often utilized when you are far behind your competitor. To play Backgammon with this technique, you need to hold two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This technique is more complex than others to play in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the chips are relocated is partially the result of the dice roll.
