The Essential Facts of Backgammon Game Plans – Part 2
August 6th, 2025 by Kaitlynn

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of skill and good luck. The aim is to move your pieces safely around the game board to your home board while at the same time your opposing player moves their checkers toward their inner board in the opposing direction. With opposing player pieces moving in opposing directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for specific tactics at specific instances. Here are the 2 final Backgammon techniques to finish off your game.

The Priming Game Strategy

If the aim of the blocking strategy is to hamper the opponents ability to move his checkers, the Priming Game strategy is to absolutely barricade any movement of the opponent by constructing a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s checkers will either get bumped, or result a bad position if he/she ever tries to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be setup anyplace between point 2 and point 11 in your game board. Once you’ve successfully assembled the prime to block the activity of your competitor, your competitor does not even get to toss the dice, and you move your chips and toss the dice again. You’ll win the game for sure.

The Back Game Strategy

The objectives of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game tactic are very similar – to hurt your competitor’s positions hoping to improve your odds of winning, however the Back Game strategy relies on alternate techniques to do that. The Back Game plan is often utilized when you’re far behind your opponent. To compete in Backgammon with this plan, you have to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This plan is more complex than others to play in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the pieces are relocated is partially the outcome of the dice roll.
