Backgammon – Three Main Plans
October 29th, 2025 by Kaitlynn

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 chief plans employed. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time calamity because they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are decidedly behind as this plan much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
