The Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part Two
Dec 2nd, 2025 by Kaitlynn

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of skill and luck. The aim is to move your chips carefully around the board to your inner board while at the same time your opposing player moves their pieces toward their inside board in the opposite direction. With competing player chips heading in opposite directions there is going to be conflict and the requirement for specific tactics at particular times. Here are the 2 final Backgammon tactics to round out your game.

The Priming Game Tactic

If the goal of the blocking strategy is to hamper the opponents ability to shift her checkers, the Priming Game tactic is to absolutely stop any movement of the opponent by assembling a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s chips will either get hit, or result a bad position if she ever attempts to leave the wall. The ambush of the prime can be setup anywhere between point two and point eleven in your game board. Once you have successfully assembled the prime to stop the movement of your competitor, the opponent does not even get to toss the dice, that means you move your checkers and toss the dice yet again. You’ll win the game for sure.

The Back Game Strategy

The objectives of the Back Game plan and the Blocking Game plan are very similar – to hurt your opponent’s positions in hope to boost your odds of succeeding, but the Back Game tactic uses different techniques to do that. The Back Game plan is often utilized when you’re far behind your opponent. To compete in Backgammon with this strategy, you need to hold two or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This technique is more complex than others to play in Backgammon because it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the pieces are moved is partially the result of the dice toss.
